Why a gastroenterologist may be needed

After surgery and radiation, part of the throat or food pipe can slowly narrow. This is called a stricture, and it can make swallowing food, and sometimes even liquids, difficult.

A gastroenterologist can widen the narrowed part using a thin camera tube (an endoscope) and a small balloon or dilator. This is called dilation. It is usually a short procedure and may need to be repeated.

Information is taken from public hospital and clinic profiles and was last checked in October 2026. Timings and contact details can change, so please confirm with the hospital before visiting.
