What a speech and swallowing therapist does

A speech and language pathologist teaches you new ways to speak after a laryngectomy: with a voice prosthesis, with an electrolarynx, or with oesophageal speech. They fit and change voice prostheses, and show you how to care for them.

They also check your swallowing, which can feel different after surgery and radiation, and teach exercises and habits that make mealtimes easier.

Information is taken from public hospital and clinic profiles and was last checked in October 2026. Timings and contact details can change, so please confirm with the hospital before visiting.
